A record in favour of the environment: in 2015 Iveco Bus produced more city buses with clean drivelines than diesels

The energy transition is a reality at Iveco Bus. In 2015, non-diesel vehicles accounted for more than 50% of Iveco Bus urban range production.

The Iveco Bus European low floor range consists of the 10, 12 and 18 m Urbanway, the 12 and 18 m Crealis and 12 and 18 m chassis.

For the first time ever in this urban range, non-diesel vehicles – running on natural gas and in hybrid electric mode – are in the lead accounting for 51% of production, which means that the same models but with Euro VI diesel engines have slipped to 49%.

This energy transition is the best example of the constant Iveco Bus commitment to combating urban pollution, a topic close to the hearts of many towns and cities around the world: CNG and hybrid electric buses produced in 2015 avoided emitting 10 tonnes of particulate matter (PM), 100 tonnes of nitrogen oxides (NOx), and 10,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2).

Iveco Bus clean buses now meet all the challenges of urban transport: air quality, climate protection, silent operation, plus the fundamental benefits of buses, namely their flexibility and low operating cost.

This success demonstrates that Iveco Bus has been able to anticipate the constantly growing expectations of local authorities and operators, as well as from the general public, for clean buses that are more respectful of natural resources, the environment and public health, and very economical to own and operate.

Iveco Bus leadership in natural gas engines is manifested by nearly 2,500 buses in France, which account for nearly 95% of the country’s CNG fleet, plus 3,000 other vehicles in many major fleets in Italy, Spain, the Netherlands and Greece. More than 5,500 Iveco buses are currently in service in total. Outside Europe, 302 vehicles operate in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, while in China 1,400 locally branded buses with Iveco CNG engines operate in Beijing and Shanghai.

Iveco Bus NGV buses are 100% compatible with biomethane, a fuel derived from organic waste (food, compostable, agricultural waste from the agrifood and foodservice industries). As such, their operation is carbon-neutral. In other words, their use does not contribute to global warming. The Iveco buses in Lille, France, are a perfect example of zero-carbon and zero-fossil-fuel travel.

The hybrid series driveline is an additional feature of Iveco Bus strategy. This technology offers smooth acceleration throughout the speed range (because of no gearbox). Batteries recover much of the deceleration energy while delivering a boost when pulling away from a stop.

Thanks to its “Arrive & Go” function, Iveco Full Hybrid buses can operate in fully-electric mode for approximately 60 metres when approaching or leaving a bus stop or red light, silently and pollution-free. The environmental performance, and significant noise and vibration suppression, are remarkable. The comfort is immediately felt by residents, pedestrians, passengers and bus drivers, who all enjoy this environmental benefit.

One more step towards carbon-free mobility.
